It is said that Fukoji Temple was built in the Kamakura period.
There is a large carved Buddha which is inscribed on rock walls in precincts of the temple. It is 8-12 meters in height and is the largest carved Buddha in all Japan. The huge central Buddha is Fudoumeio. There is Seitakadoji and Kongaradoji on both sides. Fudoumeio looked angry, but the Buddha cave has a nice expression as it has been exposed to the weather for long time. This temple is also called “hydrangea temple”. As the name suggest, you can see a lot of hydrangeas blooming in mid June. You can also see a large Buddha carved in the cliff.
